The Bangladesh Research Analysis and Information Network (BRAIN), a civil society organization advocating for democracy, honored four foreign nationals for their contributions to Bangladesh’s pro-democracy movement at an iftar event held at Hotel Sarina on Saturday (8 March 2025).
The distinguished honorees were Ambassador William B. Milam, former U.S. diplomat Jon Danilowicz, Professor Ashok Swain, and investigative journalist David Bergman.
Ambassador Milam, who served in Dhaka between August 1990 and October 1993, has been a vocal supporter of Bangladesh’s democratic aspirations in his capacity as a Senior Policy Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C.
Mr. Danilowicz, a former American diplomat who was posted to Dhaka multiple times from the 1980s to the early 2010s, has been a persistent advocate against the erosion of democracy, human rights abuses and rise of fascism in Bangladesh. He has actively countered misinformation in global media and challenged narratives that obscure Bangladesh’s political realities, making him a prominent voice in international discourse on the country’s democratic struggle.
Professor Swain, an Indian-born Swedish scholar, has gained recognition for his fearless critiques of rising hate politics in India. Declared persona non grata in his homeland, he continues to champion democracy, justice, and human dignity on a global scale through his academic work and public engagements.
Mr. Bergman, an investigative journalist, was recognized for his role in exposing the flaws of Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal. During a period of heightened political repression, he documented inconsistencies and flaws in the trials, facing significant hostility and legal censorship while upholding the principles of journalistic integrity. Amidst state-sponsored reactive fervor, he stood as a rational voice, systematically gathering data to expose a serious miscarriage of justice.
On behalf of BRAIN, a few prominent members of the political and civil society handed over crests to them.
Dr. Rumi Ahmed Khan, Convenor of BRAIN, delivered the welcome speech, while Shafiqur Rahman, Executive Officer of BRAIN, made the concluding remarks.
The organizers of the event emphasized the significance of these individuals’ contributions, stating, “These four distinguished figures have given Bangladesh something invaluable—the courage to resist, the clarity to see through deception, and the integrity to fight for what is right.”
They also said, “Their efforts and contributions remind us that, democracy is not a gift but a hard-won achievement through relentless struggle. This journey is shaped by various catalysts, and as allies, their activism stands as a testament to our shared fight. Their commitment reinforces the truth that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. No matter how uncomfortable, truth must always emerge, even in the face of power’s fiercest scrutiny.”
The event was attended by members of Bangladesh’s interim government, leaders of BNP, NCP, and other political parties, as well as prominent figures from civil society and the business community.

গত ৮ মার্চ ২০২৫ শনিবার বাংলাদেশ রিসার্চ অ্যানালাইসিস অ্যান্ড ইনফরমেশন নেটওয়ার্ক (ব্রেইন) রাজধানির হোটেল সারিনায় আয়োজিত এক ইফতার মাহফিলের অনুষ্ঠানে বাংলাদেশের গণতান্ত্রিক আন্দোলনে অবদানের জন্য চারজন বিদেশী নাগরিককে সম্মাননা প্রদান করেছে।
ব্রেইন বাংলাদেশের নাগরিক সমাজ ভিত্তিক একটি সংগঠন, যা উদার গণতন্ত্রের পক্ষে কাজ করার উদ্দেশ্যে পরিচালিত হচ্ছে।
ব্রেইন কর্তৃক সম্মানিত ব্যক্তিরা হচ্ছেন রাষ্ট্রদূত উইলিয়াম বি. মিলাম, সাবেক মার্কিন কূটনীতিক জন ড্যানিলোভিচ, অধ্যাপক অশোক সোয়াইন এবং অনুসন্ধানী সাংবাদিক ডেভিড বার্গম্যান।
রাষ্ট্রদূত মিলাম ১৯৯০ সালের আগস্ট থেকে ১৯৯৩ সালের অক্টোবর পর্যন্ত ঢাকায় মার্কিন রাষ্ট্রদূত হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করেছেন। বর্তমানে ওয়াশিংটন ডিসির উড্রো উইলসন ইন্টারন্যাশনাল সেন্টার ফর স্কলার্স-এ সিনিয়র পলিসি স্কলার হিসেবে কাজ করছেন। তিনি দীর্ঘদিন ধরে বাংলাদেশের গণতান্ত্রিক আকাঙ্ক্ষার পক্ষে সোচ্চার কণ্ঠস্বর হিসেবে পরিচিত।
মি. ড্যানিলোভিচ ১৯৮০-এর দশক থেকে ২০১০-এর দশকের শুরুর দিকে একাধিকবার ঢাকায় মার্কিন কূটনীতিক হিসেবে কর্মরত ছিলেন। বাংলাদেশে গণতন্ত্রের পশ্চাদযাত্রা, মানবাধিকার লঙ্ঘন এবং ফ্যাসিবাদের উত্থানের বিরুদ্ধে সর্বদা সোচ্চার ছিলেন। বৈশ্বিক গণমাধ্যমে বাংলাদেশ সম্পর্কিত বিভ্রান্তিমূলক তথ্য ও চিত্রায়নের মোকাবিলা করে বাংলাদেশের রাজনৈতিক বাস্তবতা তুলে ধরতে সক্রিয় ভূমিকা রেখেছেন।
অধ্যাপক অশোক সোয়াইন ভারতীয় বংশোদ্ভূত সুইডিশ পণ্ডিত। ভারতে ক্রমবর্ধমান বিদ্বেষমূলক রাজনীতির বিরুদ্ধে নির্ভীক সমালোচক হিসেবে পরিচিত। নিজ দেশে ‘পারসোনা নন গ্রাটা’ ঘোষিত হলেও তিনি বিশ্বব্যাপী গণতন্ত্র, ন্যায়বিচার এবং মানবিক মর্যাদার পক্ষে সোচ্চার থেকেছেন।
সাংবাদিক ডেভিড বার্গম্যান বাংলাদেশে খুব পরিচিত নাম। বাংলাদেশে আন্তর্জাতিক অপরাধ ট্রাইব্যুনালের বিচারপক্রিয়ার নানাবিধ ত্রুটি ও অসঙ্গতিগুলো তিনি দীর্ঘদিন যাবৎ উন্মোচন করে চলেছেন। কঠোর রাজনৈতিক দমন-পীড়নের সময় তিনি বিচারপ্রক্রিয়ার অসঙ্গতিগুলো ধারাবাহিকভাবে তুলে ধরার কারণে আইনি নিপীড়নের শিকারও হয়েছেন। রাষ্ট্রীয় নিপীড়নের রক্তচক্ষু উপেক্ষা করে তিনি যুক্তিনির্ভর বিশ্লেষণ করে বিচারিক ত্রুটিগুলো জনগণের সামনে তুলে ধরেছেন।
ব্রেইনের পক্ষ থেকে কয়েকজন বিশিষ্ট রাজনৈতিক ও নাগরিক সমাজের সদস্য তাদের হাতে ক্রেস্ট তুলে দেন।
অনুষ্ঠানে ব্রেইনের আহ্বায়ক ড. রুমি আহমেদ খান স্বাগত বক্তব্য প্রদান করেন, এবং ব্রেইনের নির্বাহী কর্মকর্তা শফিকুর রহমান সমাপনী বক্তব্য দেন।
আয়োজকরা বলেন, “এই চারজন বিশিষ্ট ব্যক্তিত্ব বাংলাদেশকে অমূল্য কিছু উপহার দিয়েছেন—প্রতিরোধের সাহস, প্রতারণার বেড়াজাল ভেদ করার ক্ষমতা এবং ন্যায়ের জন্য লড়াই করার সততা।”
তারা আরও বলেন, “তাদের প্রচেষ্টা আমাদের স্মরণ করিয়ে দেয় যে, গণতন্ত্র কোনো প্রদত্ত উপহার নয়; এটি এক নিরবচ্ছিন্ন সংগ্রামের ফসল। গণতন্ত্রের এই সংগ্রাম যে আমাদের সামষ্টিক সংগ্রামের ফসল, এটা তারই প্রতিচ্ছবি। তাঁরা যেন তাঁদের কাজের মাধ্যমে এটাই প্রমাণ করেছে, পৃথিবীর যে কোনো প্রান্তের অবিচার আদতে সর্বত্র ন্যায়বিচারের জন্য হুমকি। ক্ষমতার রক্তচক্ষু ও নজরদারিকে উপেক্ষা করেই সত্যকে সর্বদা উন্মোচিত করতে হবে।’
অনুষ্ঠানে বাংলাদেশের অন্তর্বর্তীকালীন সরকারের সদস্য, বিএনপি, এনসিপি ও অন্যান্য রাজনৈতিক দলের নেতারা, পাশাপাশি বিশিষ্ট নাগরিক ও ব্যবসায়ী সম্প্রদায়ের ব্যক্তিরা উপস্থিত ছিলেন।
