Quota movement: BRU student killed in Rangpur

A student of Begum Rokeya University (BRU) was killed during a clash between police and quota protesters in Rangpur city. 

The student’s name is Abu Saeed. He is said to be one of the co-ordinators of the Quota Movement and the student of the English Department’s 2019-20 session. Protesters alleged that he was shot dead by the police.

This incident happened on Tuesday (July 16) around 3 pm. It was also reported that several policemen were injured during the clash.

The deceased Abu Saeed, son of Maqbul Hossain, was a resident of Babanpur under Pirganj Upazila in Rangpur.

Eyewitnesses said that Tuesday at noon the students of the university came out with a procession. They went towards the campus from Lalbagh area of ​​the city. They were stopped by police when they tried to enter the campus. At one point, a clash took place between the police and students. Then the police fired rubber bullets at the students. A student was killed in the clash.

Protesters clashed with the police in front of the university in the afternoon. Many were injured in that incident. It was said that the agitators are returning to their campus with the body of the dead from Rangpur Medical College Hospital.

In this regard, Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Moniruzzaman said media that students from various schools, colleges and other educational institutions joined the quota agitating students. They clashed with the police.

‘Many policemen were injured. I heard that one died but I cannot say how he died’, he added.
